Keune Haircosmetics - Accelerating Innovation

Keune Haircosmetics is a family-owned company with a long-term vision, where science lies at the heart of everything they do. Founded in 1922 in Amsterdam, the brand has grown into one of the fastest-growing names in professional haircare. Keune develops, manufactures, and distributes products to more than 90 countries worldwide.

The challenge

Developing new hair dye products is a highly precise and complex process. Laboratory specialists must carefully combine pigments to achieve an exact target color, often requiring multiple time-consuming experiments to reach the desired result. At the same time, formulations must continuously comply with evolving regulations and maximum concentration limits. This combination of scientific precision, regulatory complexity, and iterative testing makes product development intensive, knowledge-driven, and difficult to scale efficiently.

Beyond research and development, education plays a central role in Keune's global salon community. Extensive training materials, product documentation, and technical guidelines support hairstylists worldwide. However, as the Keune Academy continues to expand, knowledge becomes increasingly fragmented across numerous documents and systems. Quickly accessing the right information is a growing challenge for salon owners, educators, and stylists. Without an intelligent way to structure and search this knowledge, valuable expertise remains underutilized.

The solution

We developed a custom AI prediction model and integrated a Large Language Model (LLM), supporting both innovation and education.

By leveraging historical research data, we developed a predictive model that forecasts the resulting color based on specific pigment combinations. This enables laboratory teams to reach the desired shade faster, significantly reducing trial-and-error while ensuring compliance with regulatory constraints. The result is accelerated innovation without compromising scientific accuracy or safety.

In parallel, we implemented an AI-powered knowledge assistant built on an LLM and securely connected to Keune's internal knowledge base. Instead of manually navigating documents, users can ask questions in natural language and instantly receive clear, context-aware answers drawn from training materials, product documentation, and technical guidelines. This transforms scattered information into accessible knowledge, empowering salon owners, educators, and stylists worldwide to learn faster and stay aligned with the latest insights.

Providing access to the right information is key to accellerating innovation.
